Considering the hectic lifestyle of most people, it may not be possible to hit the gym for an hour every day. This is where you should look toward an alternative to stay fit. Research suggests that running on a daily basis can help you add years to your life.

The best part is that you do not have to run for long. Running for a mere five minutes can do wonders for your health. A study was conducted by the Iowa State University to figure out the effects of running on an individual’s life. The results of the study hope to raise awareness amongst people and encourage them to run every day. The study involved researchers monitoring the daily lives of over 50,000 adults. The study was carried on for 15 years. The participants were aged between 18 and 100, with an average of 44 years.

During the study, over 3,000 people died. Over 1,000 people died due to heart-related issues. The study concluded that running can actually add years to your life. Subjects who were regular runners managed to add several years to their expected lifespan. In fact, the study concluded that running can increase your life expectancy by over 25 percent.

The study divided the subjects into two groups. One of the groups was runners and the second group was non-runners. The runners’ group was further divided into two categories. One category had runners who ran for more than 20 minutes a day. The second category had runners who only ran for 5 to 10 minutes daily. The running-related benefits for both categories in the runners’ group were similar. This goes to prove that you do not need to spend hours at the gym to stay in shape. Even if you take time out from your busy schedule for a five-minute run in the park, you will be able to enhance your health significantly.

Thus, even if you do not run much, you can live longer. Moreover, people who run every day can decrease their chances of suffering a cardiac disease by over 40 percent. So if you want to add years to your life, all you need to do is run for five minutes daily. Not only will you increase your lifespan but you will also remain fit.
