Working out in the winter is a necessity, but it isn’t always comfortable, especially if you prefer to exercise in the great outdoors. That cold weather could certainly stop you from pursuing your fitness goals with the same gusto that you would have in the spring, summer, and fall. But this doesn’t mean that you should stop. Instead, consider incorporating the following three tips into your workout routine so you can stay warm and get it all done.
1. Wear Layers
You might be tempted to put on one thick layer of clothing to stay warm when you are getting ready to head outside for your workout, but it is actually better to dress in layers. By wearing a few thin layers, you will be able to trap air in between every layer and warm that air as your body warms up. That will basically provide an insulating effect. And if you start to warm up too much, you could simply take the outer layers off until you are comfortable again.
Be sure to have an outer layer that is able to repel both moisture and wind. The inner layers, on the other hand, should be able to create a feeling of warmth, and they should consist of fabrics like polyester that will be able to wick sweat away from your skin.
Don’t forget to also cover exposed areas of your body where heat could be lost. Simply wearing a scarf and a hat for your neck and your head could be helpful.
2. Bring Hot Water
You’re probably already used to bringing a water bottle with you so you could stay hydrated during your outdoor workout. But during the winter, fill your bottle up with water that is the temperature of a hot cup of coffee. That warm fluid will keep you hydrated and warm. Plus, the bottle itself will help to keep your hands warm too.
3. Eat Something Spicy
Roughly one hour before heading out for your workout, eat something spicy that contains cayenne pepper. The capsaicin could help boost your body’s internal temperature and raise your metabolism. So when you fuel up with some avocado toast, as an example, just sprinkle a bit of cayenne pepper on top for extra flavor and the added benefit of a warmer body in the cold.
Now that you know a few clever ways to keep yourself warm even on a cold winter day, nothing will stop you from exercising and maintaining your fitness level and your healthy weight until spring arrives.
